Choosing the Best Grass

When you’re creating the perfect landscape for your Florida home, one of the most important things to consider is the grass that will make up the base! With the drastically wild weather and the heat to contend with, you need to find a type of grass that can handle anything the state can throw at it. You can find the best type of grass for your lawn with a little bit of research and a little bit of our help. We’ll go over some of the best grasses for Florida as well as how to choose between them for your home. Ready? Let’s go!

Types of Grasses

There are 4 types of grass in particular that are ideal for Florida homes, so we’ll get into those, helping you in choosing the best grass for your property.

  1. Augustine Grass: This is the number one choice for many in Florida. St. Augustine grows quickly, can handle the dry seasons, and it even can handle the salt that inherently comes with Florida! It does require mowing more often with its fast-growing nature and is not too fond of cold snaps, which happen occasionally. It comes in Floratam (blue-green and looks like turf), Seville (dark green with fine leaves), Palmetto (emerald green and very hardy), and Bitter Blue (blue-green and better with cold).
  2. Zoysia Grass: This beautifully deep green grass has a very turf-like look to it. Zoysia is perfect for lawns that get a lot of foot traffic, it’s resistant to disease and drought, and is very low maintenance. The best part about it? It’s pretty dense, which makes it hard for weeds to find a home! It will go dormant in cold snaps, but it comes right back.
  3. Bermuda Grass: With its green-grey color, this unique grass makes a gorgeous lawn. Bermuda has nice, deep roots that make it perfect for high-traffic areas and any tough conditions. It grows quickly and is pretty low maintenance, but if you don’t keep it in line it can get a little invasive.
  4. Bahiagrass: This is another highly popular grass in Florida. Bahiagrass is resistant to pretty much anything this state can throw at it: cold, hot, dry, storms…all of it! It is pretty easy to care for, though it does require frequent mowing and has a higher chance of weeds popping up.

Choosing the Best Grass for Your Home

Now that you’ve got a good idea of the top grass choices that can handle the Florida heat, let’s take a look at how to go about choosing the best grass for your home.

Aesthetic

If you have a specific look you’re going for with your lawn, then you’ll need to consider that. You could be looking for soft and gentle, or you could want something hardy and durable. Each type of grass will have a different feel and look with its blades, so look at that when choosing.

Maintenance

A very important thing to consider is how often you want to have to mow and water your lawn. If you love the process of lawn care, then you can go for fast-growing grass. If you dread having to mow the lawn every week, then choose a slower grower. Each type of grass will also have different requirements for watering, shade vs light, and disease/pest control.
