Floratam grass grows rapidly in the spring and summer because it enjoys being warm. Growth slows in the fall as temperatures start to decrease. In the winter, the grass completely hibernates. Floratam cannot survive below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, although, in Florida’s hot, humid climate, this is usually not a problem. It thrives on soil that is nutrient-rich, somewhat acidic, and ranges in pH from 6.0 to 7.5.

Floratam’s remarkable salt tolerance makes it a wonderful choice for coastal homes and one of the best grasses to grow in Florida. In the shade, it struggles. To maintain Floratam’s finest appearance, you’ll need to make sure your property receives at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily.

Although Floratam grows swiftly, it may not be the ideal option for regularly utilized locations like sports fields or kid’s playgrounds because it is not as resilient to foot traffic as some other grass kinds. The majority of residential and commercial settings are still suitable for it, and it spreads horizontally to swiftly fill up any damaged sections.

In the beginning, Floratam was designed to be resistant to chinch bugs, a typical grass pest in Florida. The bugs have changed over the years, though, and the grass is now less resilient than it previously was. Even so, it offers more protection than most other types. The St. Augustine Decline (SAD) virus, the brown patch fungus, the downy mildew, and the grey leaf spot are also resistant to it.

Maintenance of the Lawn and the Yard

You must start your lawn with sod, plugs, or sprigs since Floratam does not generate seeds. However, once established, the grass may reproduce by itself because of the horizontal growth of its root system. You’ll need to mow around once a week because the blades grow vertically and quickly. Keep your grass between 3 and 4 inches tall. To prevent damaging the grass, always use razor-sharp mower blades. The grass can be ripped instead of cut by dull blades, which increases the risk of pests and diseases.

You will need to regularly remove thatch from Floratam because it has a reputation for building up. While little thatch is beneficial for your lawn, too much of it can suffocate it and deprive it of the water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide that it requires to grow. Rake the thatch lose before cutting the grass if you feel it becoming heavy.

Due to Floratam’s exceptional drought tolerance, your grass only needs around an inch of water each week. To promote healthy root growth, strive to deeply water your plants each time. During the growth season, you can fertilize with a nitrogen-rich formula every month or two if your soil is nitrogen-deficient.

Advice on Watering Plants:

Floratam requires at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day.

When installing new Floratam sod, it must be watered at least once or twice daily for the first two weeks—and sometimes much longer.

Floratam grass requires around 1 inch of water each week once it has been established. What matters most is that the watering is thorough and even. So instead of spritzing the grass throughout the week for only 5 or 10 minutes each time, it is preferable to give it a wonderful thorough watering for 30 to 45 minutes at a time.
